"Another suitcase?" I asked. "Seriously? Who will you blow up this time?"

Roman chuckled: a harsh, cruel sound.

"Yeah, no death this time," he said. He sat the case on his desk and opened the zipper. He lifted the lid. Eight packages, each tightly wrapped in thin plastic and about the size of a quart of milk, greeted my eyes.

"Drugs?" I asked.

He looked annoyed.

"Yeah," he snapped. "Drugs. Drugs make money. A lot of money. Just drop them off and go. Here's the address. Give the case to a man named Teddy. Nobody else. Teddy has sketchy friends."

I snatched the scrap of paper from his hand.

"Hurry back," he said as I zipped the case. "You still need to hit your goals."

"Fuck this," I complained.

"Hey!" he snapped, instantly furious. "Let me make this clear, you fuck. I own you, Paul. Understand? You're my slave. Don't think you have free will. I can crush you. I can ruin you. You will lose everything, including Sydney. Do you understand?"

I gave a reluctant nod.

"Do you understand?"

"Yes, I understand."

"Get out."

I didn't exactly slam his office door but I did shut it hard. He did own me, and would until something changed. I hurried to my car. I was on the freeway when thoughts of Sydney and her night with Nick intruded. I'd tried to fuck her again the next day but she'd denied me.

The address was for a condo overlooking Lake Ballinger, which surprised me as I always thought the drug trade moved through seedy parts of town. I left the case in the car and parked out of sight.
